Cuddle and Rock

I love being a Mother. I cuddled and rocked both of my children when they were infants and read to them when they were older for hours on end and left the housework, ironing and cooking for later. I called it making memories.

Now almost 40 years later as I sit at home alone, I can pull those memories out to relive the most beautiful time of my life.

Thank to you a wonderful daughter and son for giving me memories!

Walk, Pedal or Drive

The mobility of the human race has been uppermost in the development and invention of wheeled transportation. God gave us two legs to make us mobile. In our desire to "save" our time and put forth less energy, we harnessed horses, mules and cows as a means of transportation. Still uncomfortable in our means of transport, the wheel was developed and along came tricycles, bicycles and carts. Too much effort was required to pedal so motors were attached and we had motorcycles, scooters, automobiles and trucks. Man still could not get where he wanted to be fast enough so along came airplanes and on and on and on.

What would have happened if we had stayed with what we were given - two legs? The environment would have not experienced the impact of concrete, asphalt, emissions from vehicles, and so much more. Would the earth and its inhabitants been healthier?

The little town of Griffin, Georgia is now considering banning bicycles from sidewalks. A little courtesy on both the part of the rider as well as the walker would most likely cure the woes of the complainants, but then the lack of such courtesy is the cause of so many accidents on the streets, roads and highways. Walking is healthy; pedalling is healthy. With the continuing rise in the price of fuel, there will be many more walking and riding. It is the cheapest form of transportation and can be so much fun in the process of getting where we need to go.

Whatever form of transportation you choose, remember to be courteous.

As Grandpa use to say, "be nice!"

Southern Tornados

I had seen all the pictures on the news, those sent via email and over the phone, and I had listened to all the horror stories and vivid descriptions of the devastation caused by the tornados that hit our area on Thursday morning. But nothing I had seen or heard prepared me for my trip into and through Barnesville yesterday. The bile rose in my throat as I looked at the power of the storm and I wondered how anyone survived this mighty wind. It brought tears to my eyes as we drove slowly through the Grove Street area and I know that the Buice family was mightily blessed to have escaped with their lives.

My girls had called and ordered me to the bathroom with pillows to cover my body, but pillows would have not been enough if these storms had chose another path. As I huddled and fervently prayed for protection for me and mine, I realized that we are truly in the hands of God and after seeing the destruction there is nothing humanly possible to protect oneself from this type of disaster.

My heart goes out to Marty and his family as they try to rebuild their lives without their parent's and I pray for peace to them as they make the long journey through their grief. I thank God that he spared the lives of so many.

Oil Spill

Much reading on the Louisiana Oil Spill on the anniversary of the mishap. Some reports all is back to normal in the area. Another report revealed oil spill workers are mysteriously sick after working the spill.

The earth replenishes and heals itself even if traces of destruction are still visible. Very few things can stop the revitalization after a disaster. Trees sprout forth, water purifies itself and life goes on. It may not be the same life, but life is temporary - as soon as one is gone another replaces it.

Nothing is forever on this earth.

Government Shutdown

Where is all the concern? There will not be a government shutdown. This happened several years ago and was a power play which resolved itself in a few weeks.

It is another dramatic tactic to bring attention to our capitol and the power struggle that is this United States. It isn't like they don't have an operational budget. It is because the two political parties are struggling to show strength for their interest.

Budgets are really very simple but really hard to stick to. You have a certain amount of money coming in and you have a certain amount of services to provide. Any shortfall calls for cuts in services and any overage should be dumped in a "savings" account to cover emergencies.

You can't get blood from a turnip and all those legislators that have made promises they now can't keep will have to face the consequences of their mouth overflow. You don't make promises you can't keep.

These knowledgeable people need to get the street smarts of their president and get on with business. After all aren't the political parties no more than organized people fighting for power and control. No where is more crimes committed than on capitol hill and the perpetrators are all covered by diplomatic immunity.

I really try to keep up with the happening around the world, but apparently I have missed something.

Last Sunday Gadhafi's son advised that the United States was making a grave error in supporting the rebels as they were the bad guys. He advised it would all come to light and the United States would see the truth.

Last night (Monday) President Obama revealed he was keeping his promise and turning the support of the Libyans over to the United Nations.

This morning the United States representative in the United Nations advised that the White House had not decided to turn the support over as yet because our President is considering arming the rebels of another country.

Did I miss something?

I have some questions. Is the United States now supporting the al Quida through our President's actions?
Does the President believe he can go on national television and lie to the American people without retribution?
Can he?

I need more information which I am most likely not going to get. Does he have intelligence from our foreign spy network to confirm that the rebels are the bad guys? Is their information more reliable than that received concerning Iraq? What happened overnight to change the "White House's" mind?

Trying to make sense out of all this and hope I am not alone!

Overdone

For years our little county government ran like a well oiled clock with 3 clerks and an administrator in the commissioners office. With little economic growth in the county as well as nationwide, the commissioners feel the need to add more personnel. A payroll clerk, an accounts payable clerk, a receptionist/secretary, an office manager and now a fire fee clerk to handle the all encompassing clerical duties for a county of around 17000. Talk about efficiency and wastefullness and the county is suppose to be in a budget crunch!

I have heard the term "the good ole boys" throughout my lifetime and I have often pondered who these boys are and how did they get there.

Is this a group of friends that rule the world?

Is it the financially elite that control all official matters?

Is it the family that has earned the respect of his friends and neighbors, co-workers, fellow church members and most of all his family?

From the highest to the lowest positions in government, there is always a group of "the good ole boys" and they are not the same group or following the same rules.

I will continue looking, but if any one finds "the good ole boys" please let me know so I can see what is so special about these guys.

Splost Vote

The vote on the splost tax passed in our little county this week. I support the tax as a means of generating revenue to continue services to the community - and ours has been hard hit economically in the past few years, but then so have many others. County government should not be in the money making business.

There are many counties that continually increase property tax, while others institute an local income tax. The splost tax distributes the burden of tax among those that spend money in the county. If you don't have money to spend, it has no impact.

I feel that our commissioners are not wise stewards of the monies they receive for county operations, but when constituents are always screaming for more and better services there must be a way to support those services.

For the past 20 odd years our population has not changed more than 2000 people and that was when there was manufacturing and a college in the county. Our county is included in the Metro Atlanta network only because the majority of our population work in the network and live in our little county. There are so many disadvantages to this designation and few benefits.

Thanks for those that supported the splost and remember to pray for our commissioners in their decision making in the use of these funds.

So many new faces taking office this week or soon thereafter. Their positions or seats won by promising to represent the will of the people; to do away with all the overspending in progress now; and to return freedom to the people of the United States. How long will it last?

How long before the first lobbyist reminds a senator or representative of that campaign contribution that helped get him elected? How long before a lobbyist promises a contribution to ensure re-election? How long before the "let's make a deal" starts and the campaign promises and the constituents are thrown to the wind?

The one thing I have been told or heard by elected officials consistently is "but you don't understand; you don't know how it is." It seems so easy to make promises, plans, and set up objectives that one or two months down the road don't mean a hill of beans. Politicians forget the constituents and grow on the power and the people they are now exposed to and have the ear of. It all comes down to power and control and no matter who is elected or what they promise, power and control take over and they are no longer interested in the wishes or thoughts that put them in office. Friend or foe, it doesn't matter - they are the important ones now and they are making the decisions.

One warning - elections come often. Tread carefully. Now more than ever before the American people are watching and are no longer apathetic to what is going on in their government whether it be local, state, or federal.

After attending a local Board of Commissioner's meeting last week I am prompted to put to paper a few observations. I am not an economics guru nor a political science professional, but I do possess a little common sense.

First, if the community wants services they must be willing to pay the taxes to fund the services. Second, there are state laws that require local government to fund certain services and positions and the local government does not have a choice on whether to comply. The county also has the legal obligation to financially support the authorities and agencies that are developed and designated by the county commissioners. Therefore it becomes most important to not be frivolous in establishing authorities or agencies the county cannot support and to also retain some control over such to ensure limited liability to the county government.

If the people of the county want manned fire departments in the four zones of the county, they must be prepared to fund those departments through increased taxes. On the other hand, abuse of the tax payer's funds is illegal and unethical. Tax payer money is not there for use by the board of commissioners or agency heads to use as they see fit. The commissioners are elected to represent the people of the county, but the people have the responsibility to ensure the commissioners perform in a legal and ethical manner. Many counties have citizen oversight committees and others have citizens responsible enough to attend meetings and remain cognizant of how their county is run.

The county budgets are requested by the agencies or departments and approved by the commissioners and once funded should be closely adhered to. Any excess should be returned to the county coffers and not squandered on non essentials. Emergency situations occur and must be handled accordingly.

There is a misconception that the tax assessor's office and the tax commissioner's office set the taxes. The tax assessor's office assess the value of the property and ensures uniformity of assessments in the county and the tax commissioner's office collects the taxes for the county. Taxes are based on 40% of the fair market value of the property. The tax digest is a compilation of the assessed value of real and personal property. The millage rate is attained by dividing the budget by the assessed value of property or the tax digest. This is done by the board of commissioners not by the tax assessor or the tax commissioner.

There is so much duplication in services within the city and county. A consolidated government would benefit the citizens greatly and do away with such duplication and result in a streamlined operation with maximum benefits to the residents.

Elections are right around the corner and I am so glad that these ads will soon be gone. The media rules in America either through their reportiing or the ads that are allowed to run on these stations.

It is an important time for our nation and I hope that people go to their knees in prayer before going to the polls to vote. With the enclosed voting booths and the confidentiality assumed in the voting process, no one will ever know how someone votes - which is a good thing. I could stand in front of you and claim support for first one candidate and then another only to enter the polling place and actually vote completely different.

It has been said that a man is only as good as his word, and at one time that was true. There was also a time when a person knew everyone in his neighborhood, their families and most of their friends. Times have changed, morals have changed, ethics have changed. People say one thing and do another. People no longer know each other, they know about each other. It is a hard job to know where candidate stands on the issues at hand and how they will react when those issues are up for a vote.

Our congressmen, representatives, and senators are not among us when the vote counts and peer pressure in the legislature is tremendous. All the money, the favors, the control and the power take over and the people back home are forgotten in the hoopla of the moment. Family, friends, and neighbors are in the past and the power people are in the here and now.

Think carefully when you go to the polls in the next 4 weeks. Pray for our country and where it is headed.

Economically Speaking

Times are hard for people, business and government. I have been jobless for a year and a half and even though I search the ads and posting every other day, I don't see much hope for the future and I know I am not alone. There are many families suffering through much worse as they have children they are trying to feed, clothe, and house. Families are breaking up under the stress. How long will it be before our little community has the need for homeless shelters and food kitchens? We already have homeless in our community, but they can always find an empty building or a covered front porch to get a bit of sleep, but remember, winter is coming and where will they go?

Business' have closed their doors as they can no longer afford the high taxes that are already here, much less those that are scheduled to go into effect the first part of the year. The EPD restrictions, OSHA restrictions, the WC insurance, the unemployment taxes, the licenses, the permits are all contributing factors to the closings. The small businesses do not stand a chance and the large businesses are moving their operations overseas to escape the never ending taxes and insurance, no to mention the lower production cost.

We have thrown common sense out the window and now the government is protecting us from ourselves. I am not in favor of sweat shops any more than the rest of the people of this country, but regulations have closed more industry than lack of sales ever thought about doing.

The bank sales in our area seem to have abated somewhat, but that doesn't mean that construction has rebounded. Subdivision development has ceased and there are many lots sitting vacant as well as new homes that just don't sell. Contractors are looking elsewhere for employment as skilled laborers and most are having to go out of town to find work. It has happened before. People have followed work all over this United States in an effort to survive. Georgia is no longer a manufacturing hub and people are leaving.

New businesses have moved into downtown Atlanta and some of the satellite cities surrounding the big city and bless their hearts, Lagrange landed a gold mine in the Kia plant. Oh for a Kia plant for our little central Georgia town.

I really feel for the upcoming generation. Given everything they ask for, how will they survive. It is time to teach our children and grandchildren that life can exist without cell phone, ipods, DVDs, even television. Can you remember the time before television, when a good book or a deck of cards were the entertainment of the weekend?

Eggs

No doubt some foods make people sick. We have pasteurized, homogenized, purified, sterilized until there is no bacteria - good or bad. Our bodies immune system sits still for so long without having to fight even the smallest bacteria and when we get just a little bacteria in our system it doesn't know how to handle it.

Raw milk, fresh eggs, and fresh meat straight from the farm without all the sterilization and preservation can't be beat, but our bodies can no longer handle the wholesomeness of fresh anything much less any bacteria it may bring with it.

We have become wimps as a result of our nice nasty attitudes.

Basic Coffee Makers

With many visitors this weekend I was approached by one gentleman that had heard of my "demon possessed" coffee maker. He related that he had not heard about my coffee maker from just one person but three different people were rejoicing that the "demon possessed" coffee maker was no more. I had to chuckle. I have used an upgraded model of a Mr. Coffee for the past 6 years. Hubby and I had no trouble with the machine, however if anyone else tried to make coffee, it was a disaster. When I say a disaster I am dead serious. My daughter was a victim many times when the receptacle for the coffee would over flow pouring water profusely over the counter and onto the floor. Many others have tried to be helpful and make the coffee only to have water everywhere coming either from the coffee receptacle or from the bottom of the pot. Well, finally, the "demon possessed" coffee maker died.

Prior to the "demon possessed" Mr. Coffee, hubby and I tried a Black and Decker coffee pot and returned it only two days after purchase. The carafes do not fit the base on the Black and Decker pots. We have looked at several models of the Black and Decker and all have the same problem. With the automatic buttons on the machines, the carafe must fit properly for the coffee to flow into the carafe. If not, the coffee will overflow the coffee receptacle and flow onto the counter. Either the carafe is too large for the base or the base is not designed to properly hold the carafe.

While shopping for a replacement, we looked at the Mr. Coffee machines. They were a little overpriced compared to the other brands and with the difficulties others had with our machine, we decided to try the GE brand. The GE carafe fits well and we sure don't have time to stand by to make sure the coffee is flowing into the carafe. The design was pleasing to the eye and functional. Programmable, it is easy to operate and you can set the start time and go about your business. Though not a daily choice, gourmet coffee can also be brewed in the machine. After a week of use, we are pleased with the new machine as are our guests.

Mr. Coffee's basic coffee maker is still a good buy, but add a few bells and whistles and they have priced themselves out of the competition. I know there are several brands that I have not covered as they are more complex and provide functions that we do not use. For basic coffee making, I am very pleased with this GE brand.

It is a little on the warm side today with heat warning issued for our area (heat index at 105) so I was glad to get out earlier this morning. Sis called to tell me she had found a super yard sale and I needed to get out there early. I love yard sales! It is the best source of my reading material and when Sis told me they had book for 10 cents each, I knew I had to hurry. Wallah! I picked up 8 good books and now have more reading material.

I have been collecting books for many years. I enjoy reading most everything, but mysteries are my all time favorite. I have most of Stuart Woods and James Patterson. I also have many Childs and Preston, Grimes, Iles, Wilkie Collins, Hillerman, Johansen, Clancey, Ludlam and Cornwell. I love Burke's stories, too. For inspiration, Karen Kingsbury and Lori Wick are my favorites, but I also like Gunn and Copeland. I found a Beverly Lewis today. She is new to me, so I am excited about tasting her wares.

I managed to find a Pride and Prejudice and A Wrinkle In Time in today's pickings. Good additions to my collection. I would dearly love to find a few of the Miss Minerva books that our fourth grade teacher read to us every day after lunch. Mrs. Ritchie knew the key for getting children to relax, but keeping their minds active. But then again, Mrs. Ritchie had the key to productive teaching. A classmate and I were discussing her not long ago and how we all loved her and how much we learned from her.

On top of all the books, I managed to add a few wind chimes to my collection. I don't have favorites, but the more unusual the better. My favorite of today is the pony shoe with little medal cylinder danglers. Looks good on my porch!

There are a couple of Estate Sales in our area this weekend and I may have to wander over and have a look. I reviewed the pictures but found no wind chimes or books listed - maybe I won't waster my time!

Election Time

I listened to an interview with a political candidate on the news the other night that caused me to stop and watch - I am not a television watcher, but I do keep an ear turned while I read. The candidate was telling the reporter that she didn't know how to run against someone who she knew nothing about.

When did elections become a contest of running against someone? When a person runs for an office, they should be running only against themselves. They should feel they have the qualifications for holding the office and the ability to represent their constituents in the best way possible. Why do candidates feel they have to run against someone?

The media takes the blame for smearing candidates and officials, but in reality the opposing candidates are the investigative reporters. The candidates are the ones who find the dirt, research the records, and audit the accounts of those with the audacity to run against them for public office. Wouldn't it make a difference if these same candidates met with the constituents and discussed the problems they are facing and to actually get their opinions on the issues of today. That is only a dream! That would mean a personal sacrifice on the part of the candidate - the candidate would actually have to do something and meet face to face with the constituents. How ridiculous!

Recently a local candidate came to "ask for" our votes. I was coming out of the garden as he came toward the house. I had met this man many times on previous occasions, but hubby said he wouldn't know him if he met him on the street. I invited him in to meet my mate. His response was he didn't have a lot of time and he had a lot of people to see. Warning signs went up, but he came in met hubby and discussed a few issues. My point is this - if hasn't time now to talk to us and tell us about himself and what he stands for, what will happen when he gets elected. Will he have time to hear our opinion on the issues or our complaints on the service we are receiving?

Candidates, do you have time for a meeting on a campaign ad, but you don't have time to attend a one hour town hall meeting where you can meet face to face with the constituents of your area?

Candidates, do you have obligations that prevent you from speaking at a community committee meeting, but you can play golf with the lobbyist that is funding your campaign?

Candidates, do you listen to your constituents desires on issues or do you support the big business that donates money or gratuities to you and your political party?

Candidates, do you know what the issues are?

This year, vote smart! Know your candidates or at least try to get to know them. We will still make mistakes, candidates will still present themselves in the most positive way possible only to let us down. Remember, the political party comes first and the constituents come second. What does your political part support? What is your political party's stand on the issues? If the candidate is an incumbent, his/her voting record is easily checked as is his/er attendance record.

Yes, vote smart, but more importantly vote!

I am just plain disgusted!

I am sick over the inability to stop a oil leak that is destroying my favorite ocean areas and the wildlife that inhabits the area.

I am fed up with the continuous lies told by our elected leaders.

I am sick over the moral decay of our society.

I am tired of discontented, jealous, hate filled people spewing vile and malicious statements against their fellowman.

I am sickened by those who can only see the bad and never search for the good in people.

I am dismayed with people who seek pleasure at the expense of others rather than finding peace and happiness within themselves.

I am disgusted with the lack of respect for others and lack of self respect in our people.

I am saddened that it is taking longer and longer for our young people to mature and become responsible.

I pray for those who lack compassion for their fellow man.

I miss my gentle friends who worked so hard to keep peace and ensure justice in the world and could always find the good in people.

At this time in the life of our nation, we as a people should be building our neighbors up rather than tearing them down. We continue to advocate that we are a Christian nation, but do our actions reflect a Christian attitude.

Troops to the Border

Finally, the President is sending troops to the border to aid in controlling the illegal immigration problem. I know the ranchers living in that area are feeling relief for the support.

Why do we need to control immigration in the first place? I know, that sounds rather silly to most of us, but some people honestly don't understand the danger in opening the borders and allowing everyone and anyone into the United States or any country as far as that goes.

We control immigration for the same reasons we control the shipping of fruit and vegetables across state lines. When inspected during the shipping process if disease and pests are found they are not allowed to ship. The same holds true for the immigration process. When a person travels between countries, they must have a passport. In order to obtain a passport, a person must be inspected - immunizations, verification of identity, a clear criminal history and possess general good health.

When the traveler bypasses the normal process, they are not only endangering themselves, but also the residents of the country to which they are traveling. It has been reported that the increase in drug trade (smuggling) has provoked the President to act in this instance. Whatever the reason, it is a welcome move.

America has a reputation of going to the aid of the citizens of those countries known for their inhuman treatment of their citizens. If the Mexican people are so unhappy in Mexico, perhaps the United States should ascertain the reason for their discontent. Do the people of Mexico need aid from America now? Why are these people so anxious to cross the border and reap the benefits of the American people?

I fully support the Immigration and Naturalization Act and welcome those willing to follow the process established for immigration to the United States. I do not support illegal immigration.

Lee and Crystal now have a tension filled week of work and of waiting. The tension and stress will be tremendous, but being the performers they have shown to be, they will overcome and on Tuesday will give the performance of their lives.

The opportunities that American Idol provide these unknown musicians are outstanding. These unknowns are given the opportunity to be seen and heard without jumping through the hoops of the music industry, however the hoops they jump through on American Idol is just as demanding and to top it all they are receiving advice and instruction from some of the best in the business.

Can't wait for the grand finale!

Not a TV Watcher, BUT

I am not a television watcher - normally - but I love American Idol! Not the early days with all the silliness, but when it gets to the final ten, I tune in and watch. There are so many talented people out there that just need a chance to perform and then there are those that look good, but hey, they really sound horrible.

My hubby and I choose two from the top ten that we think will win, then watch and wait. Sometimes they are our favorites and sometime, like last year, they are the ones we think the public will choose.

Crystal has been a performer from day one. She has consistently performed well week after week and has adapted to whatever the judges have thrown at her. She has a strong voice and can go from high to low, looking fantastic with each performance. I still prefer her long skirts and sandals, but she is following suggestions as she is suppose to do. Crystal sings with feeling and joy, as if she wrote the songs herself.

Lee has become a performer. Still a bit shy about his popularity, he has progressed as a performer. His insecurity is still evident after each performance as he waits for the reaction of the judges, but last night he watched the audience and was startled that they were singing along with him. The amazement was evident in his facial expressions while he was talking with Ryan. Lee has stuck to the costume he started with showing he is true to himself and what he is comfortable with. Whether he wins the competition or not, Lee has established himself as an entertainer and performer and will be turning out music from now on.

Casey is not as vocally strong as Crystal and Lee and I feel he focuses more on his pretty boy image than on performing the music. Casey is one of those I can listen to him sing, but can't watch him perform. Not my favorite, but hey, I am not a musical genius either.

They will all be winners and I am sure someone will snatch them up and sign them to a contract before the lights go out on the last performance. Luck to all three. You have given me much entertainment over the past few weeks.

I am always a little miffed at people running unopposed. All these gripes and complaints against our elected officials and the threats of voting them out on election day and then no one cares enough to provide themselves or another viable candidate to challenge the position of those receiving the complaints. If one is so unhappy with the jobs these officials are doing then why are they running unopposed? I say to you "you know you didn't mean what you said so 'take it back'." Sounds a little childish doesn't it? Well, that is what all the picking and bickering sounds like through the years. The threats, the name calling, the temper tandrums are al childish is you are not willing to stand behind your words.

It is a challenge to run a county, much less a state or a nation. The citizens expect services that reflect the amount of taxes paid however very few citizens are cognizant of the cost of the services provided. To oversee the operations of any government entity is a challenge and to do so pleasing all the citizens is an impossibility. To verbally attack a person that has offered themselves up for election is a right of the people, but to do so unjustly is slanderous.

Do you keep your promises? How do you vote out someone with no opposition? Citizens are so fickle. They can be vehemently opposed to an elected official one day and so apathetic when it comes to finding a candidate that represents their beliefs and ideals. Does that mean you can't make them happy no matter what? Yes, I think there are people like that.

Qualifying for some local and state positions started this week in our neck of the woods. Every post is a most important job in our little community. With little over 16,000 in our county, you would think people would be community oriented and supportive of those wishing to practically "donate" their time to helping the county - but not our county. We have some of the harshest judges in the state among our citizens. They are not happy with their lot in life or your lot in life either - it doesn't matter that it has no affect on them. Election years always bring out the worst in our county. That is when I quit reading our local papers and find a good novel to delve into. I do believe there are a couple of Stuart Woods latest tales that I haven't read. BUT, remember to vote! This is your chance to have a say in who makes the decisions for our county, state, and nation.

I believe the people of the United States have seen the catastrophic results of letting someone else think for them and now do not know how to rectify the situation

I believe over the next few years, the American people will experience the loss of many more freedoms and rights

I believe the attack of 9/11 should have been a wake up call for the American people and they hit the snooze button and gently went back to sleep

People, stop and think - the United States has intervened consistently and with harsh militay strength in countries that have tread on the rights of the people of that country. Why would we not take a harsh stand when the rights of the American people have been tread on?

As a teen of the sixties, I have accepted the blame for a lot of the problems in our world today. That's right, not just our country, but our world. Our way of thinking was not confined to this land between the two oceans, but the other lands between those same two oceans. The concept of what one generation could change was tremendous.

Now I want to accept the blame for all the good things to come from our era. We were the first to "think outside the box." That's right! Us old folks let our imagination wander and look at all the new develops we found from agriculture to technology and all that vast fantasyland in between. We were the generation that knew no limits and as thoughts were put into action, everything in our world started the great change.

We experimented in medicine, electronics, equipment, construction, architecture, weapons, space, and the list goes on and on. I remember the day we first walked on the moon - and yes we all walked on the moon that day. That was just the beginning as ideas formed and grew in the many heads that watched that walk.

Where at one time it took weeks for a field full of workers to pick cotton, today one machine manages the task in a half a day. Where at one time it took several workers, many months and many saws to fell the trees of the forest, a forest will disappear in only a few weeks once the work of the new machinery is set in place and put to work. Where at one time it took a relay of messengers to get an urgent message to its destination, it now takes seconds to communicate with anyone anywhere in the world.

No, our generation did not do it all, but by golly we started the ball rolling. We recognized the value of the imaginations of the mind and gave credence to the wild ideas that seemed impossible to achieve, but achieve we did.

Yes, in the process jobs were abolished , people were left behind if they did not keep up, and some things were lost, but just look at what the world is capable of now. Life is so much easier, faster, comfortable, and convenient. As a result of all our efforts, people have more time to enjoy the good things, they don't have to work as hard, they are healthier and better fed, they are warmer in winter and cooler in summer - we sure have it made.

If all of this is true, why does each generation dream for the "good old days"? Why do we pine for the days of yesterday? What are we missing?

Teen of the Sixties continued

All men are created equal. That is the one statement that has brought about more changes than any other. As teens of the sixties we were smart. We had studied, we had learned, we knew. But did we know the consequences?

We had grown up with parents that had lived through the great depression, World War II, the Korean conflict and we were in the middle of the Cold War. The end was coming soon. We were raised in an atmosphere of doom and gloom. The depression slowly - oh so slowly - ended and suddenly America was the land of plenty. So many worries and fears had been overcome. There was even a vaccine for smallpox, measles and polio. Man had conquered. But did we know the consequences?

Fashion, once only viewed in magazines, was foremost in the minds of the ladies. These ladies had made dresses from flour sacks or worn remakes for years and now wanted real clothes. Then fashion changed and the focus of the world changed with it. The dress shops could not keep enough dresses on the racks - from mini to midi. Then came the department stores - they carried not only dresses, but shoes, handbags, hats, scarves and so much more and not just for women, but for the whole family. If Sears could do it in a catalog, why couldn't it be done in a store? But did we know the consequences?

Elvis hit the stage and girls went wild. The Beatles followed and music was changed forever. How could we have known that this change would lead to Lady Gaga or Mr. Lambert? Children were no longer taught to say please, thank you, yes ma'am, and no sir. I heard one woman tell me her children were not subserviant to anyone and were not allowed to use those phrases. Respect was thrown out the window and with the loss of respect for others, self respect disappeared. But did we know the consequences?

And now we pine for what was - what could have been. Is it too late to redirect the paths of humanity? Can we restore respect for self, others, and our world? Have we destroyed too much? Are there enough of the "old ones" left to reach out?

The teens of the sixties were responsible for more cultural change than any other generation. I can say that so definitively because I was a teen of the sixties. There was no limit to our imagination or the lines we would cross. We experimented with life like no other dared. If there was a rule, we broke it. Protocol meant nothing. We would support any cause that made half way sense even if it couldn't be justified. We were so smart and brave and forward thinking. It was the Era of Rebellion.

We were the generation that changed music as quickly as we did fashion. Drugs came out of the closet. Sexual taboos were abolished. Community living rather than family living was the way to go.

Women no longer stayed at home and provided the stability and security so needed for family growth and success. Women could definitely run a company and would one day rule the world. Anyone can take care of a child. Hire someone to clean the house and do the laundry. Restaurants provide plenty of food. Why should women stay at home when they had so much to offer to the rest of the world?

And now we pine for the way it was. We changed the world! What in the world were we thinking?

Unemployment

As most of you know, I have been unemployed for a little over a year. Manipulation has been the key to survival for hubby and I for the past year. I am constantly teased as a tight wad - I prefer to think I am most frugal. It matters not as in the long run the unemployment has been uncomfortable without being unbearable. I am cooking more and eating out less, which doesn't mean we are eating less at all. ...and this smoking thing, I am down to half a pack a day \, but it is sure a struggle. (My goal for next week is 5 cigs a day - that should really save some money, but hubby is going to have a heck of a time paying my therapy bill.)

It has become somewhat of a game with us to see where we are spending and not getting a return. It is surprising the add-ons we will pay for and never use. By cancelling unused subscriptions and services, I have manged to cut our monthly spending by close to $500 a month without giving up one thing that was being used. When you have the extra to spend, it doesn't seem worth the effort to cancel or change your service package, but when your income is eliminated, it is a huge difference. So, when I wrote the article (letter) to DirecTV, I was just venting against their interference in my savings game. It still irritates me as I now view them as an adversary rather than a service provider.

I made one of my periodic trips to the unemployment office yesterday. The lines are much longer than one year ago and the desparation in the faces of the clients was really a sad thing to see. For every one person served, three more walked in the door, the line never ending. The employment situation is getting worse for our area. From the conversation around me most of the customers had been layed off from skilled jobs. Hopefully some phase of manufacturing will see Griffin as a "Great and Growing" city.

I would like to interject a huge "Thank You" to the staff of the Griffin Career Center. These people were fantastic in their handling of the people requesting assistance. Pleasant, efficient, precise in their directions, they waited on customer after customer without the first break in their demeanor. Even the rudest and most demanding of customers received the same greeting and service as the most well mannered customer. Even though the 20 minute task took almost two hours, it was through no fault of the personnel at the center. There were around 30 people in line on my entering the Center and there were probably 40 when I left. The system for handling the claims was the most efficient I have seen.

Meanwhile, I will keep reading and writing and somewhere, someone will pick up my manuscript and say "This is just what I was looking for!" and I will get a call. Until then,

Good move since the cancellation knocked $12.99 plus tax per month off our bill. No problem. Then this month we receive notice that our base package cost will be increased by $10.00 plus tax per month.

Shame on you! You are already getting lamblasted by Dish TV for your higher rates and now you raise them even more. Could the people of the United States survive a military conflict on US soil? Do we know how to be alert and cautious? How would the citizens of Atlanta, Georgia or Orlando, Florida or Dallas, Texas respond to an attack on these highly populated cities?

I think of the bombing and fighting in the many cities of the Middle East and Asia and wonder if the American people would pull together and support each other if we were in the same situation. The people of our country can be so passionately divided on many issues, yet if needed, would those differences interfere with the support and compassion needed in a military conflict.

My heart hurts! Two more businesses in our little town have closed their doors shutting out the business that was not there to keep them going. One a gathering place for the conservative ole codgers to meet and complain every morning while sipping their coffee. The other a specialty coffee shop and gathering place for students in between classes.

Both will be missed! That means two more buildings empty on main street. I think that brings the total to 5 or is it 6? Reminds me of the ghost towns of the old west.

Give me a break!

Much is being made of the unsavory comments made about Obama. So what! Political jokes and poking fun at elected officials is a way of life in this country. President Clinton was attacked on every front (mostly personal), no one had more jokes told about him than President Jimmy Carter - and it extended to his family (remember Billy Beer), and what about our cowboy movie star President Reagan. The list goes on and on. It comes with the territory and it goes deep and personal.

President Obama is not treated any differently and if he and his supporters want to keep whining, so be it. There is too many "unknowns" about the man which fertilizes the field of opportunities. From unanswered questions surrounding his birth, his college years and extends all the way to his term in the Senate. If the American people received some viable answers to honest questions it would cut the comments and jokes by more than half. Well, maybe not - he still has those ears.

At a time when the United States is still cautious and insecure as a result of the attacks of 09/11, the people have elected a bi-racial Muslim president. That in itself is an astounding fact. The people saw something in this man, whether it was charm and charisma or an exceptional intelligence, that drew the interest of millions of people to his side. His promises gave people of this country hope and revealed he was at least aware of their concerns and problems and wanted to help. He appealed to the people. It has been many years since a candidate recognized the needs of the people and promised to address those needs.

Now after the fact, people are asking questions and it is not only those who opposed President Obama in the election, but his supporters want documented answers and the list of questions grows daily.

My first question is who is responsible for ensuring that candidates for federal positions are qualified to run for office. The documentation should reside with that person or office and should be made available to the public. If that person or office failed to adequately perform their duties, the election should be declared null and void and that person should be replaced with someone eligible and capable to perform the duties. There are too many people doing just enough to get by and not performing their duties in a responsible manner.

Bless you Mr. Reid. You are on the hot seat now. You have admitted your comments were inappropriate and apologized. It is now up to your colleagues to determine the best action for you to take. The post that you fill requires caution in comments and actions and there have been too many errors in both among out leaders.

It all goes back to the old adage - think before you speak. In this day of political correctness it is most important to keep personal opinions jailed.

Can you believe it?

I can't find a thing to gripe about!

I have expressed my views on paying forward for a new power plant. I guess since I am going to be hungry in 2012 I need to go ahead and pay the grocer for what I will need.

I have expressed my views on people making statements without checking their facts.

I have provided links to the Health Care Reform Bill so readers can express their opinions in a knowledgeable way.

In fact I have pretty much sounded off on everything happening - just my opinion!

There is one point of interest found in an article written by Andrew Odom with the Barnesville Herald Gazette that made me smile. AARP has lost 200,000 members as of 2008. Perhaps they are not representing their members, but remember that is only a drop in the bucket to their total membership of around 40 million. There sure are a lot of old folks around!

Goodbye, my friend!

I told my friend goodbye for the final time on New Year's eve day. He was calm, peaceful and trying to rest in the midst of all the family and friends coming together to tell him goodbye and let him know what an important person he had been to them and to let him know how grateful they were to have known him.

He was so many different things to so many different people. Blessed with the ability to assess the needs of those around him, he was there with an encouraging word with a simple phone call or a visit to just sit and talk.

Having lived through so many trials of his own, he could relate to most any situation presented him and through his experience and knowledge he gave guidance when needed.

Yesterday and today was a true celebration of his life. So many stories, so many memories shared and retold with many many smiles from those whose life he touched.

I will miss you friend. Thank you for being there.

I read an article yesterday and the comments following the article stumped me. The majority of the contributors were angry over the Health Care Bill's progress and then stated they would vote their representatives out of office come election time. Why? The representatives and senators for this district and our state DO NOT support the Health Care Bill. Remember, we are only one state and the other 49 states' representatives and senators vote also. What makes the residents of a state happy? I have read the results of a survey published by LiveScience. com which revealed Georgia rated 19 in the happy states. This compares to our surrounding states all showing up in the top ten -Florida #3, Tennessee #4, South Carolina #8, and Alabama #9. Well, #19 isn't so bad out of 50 states. Georgians are in the top 50.

There is much discussion in the report and by the bloggers on what makes a state a happy state. Economics is probably the biggest deciding factor. People need money to live and Georgians do not have money. Atlantans (the conglomerate of people from all over the world) may have money, but the state overall does not have the resources for the people to make a living. Georgia is basically a rural state and the manufacturers have closed up and moved on.

Most of the rural Georgians do not want to see change in their communities, but how can industry expand, if there is no change? As late as last week a company wanting to establish a plant in our community received numerous questions and complaints about the odor that may be produced by the plant. Sometimes industry emits odors.

The mills that my grandparents worked in covered the area with cotton lint and dust, the dyes from the dye plant put out horrible smells, and nothing could smell worse than asphalt. That is jobs, that is progress. If factories open then the traffic will be heavier, the need for daycare increases, and yes, there will be odors, sounds, and sights that are not always pleasing to the senses. But industries provide jobs, may reduce taxes, and give the community something to build on.

The alternative, keep complaining, let the community waste away, and watch the children grow up and leave. Or better yet, move to Florida where people are happy.

Going Out of Business

It is so sad and disheartening to see so many businesses closing their doors. Some of these are owner operated, but others employ hundreds of people. What is upsetting is the chains that are choosing to close business because they do not meet expectations. I am not saying it is not a smart thing to do for the owners - it is just sad that so many will be losing their jobs at years end or sooner.

It is extremely hard in a small town to make a go of any specialty business. With rent and utilities taking the first thousand plus dollars of your sales there is nothing left for inventory replacement much less earning a salary. The business providing the "must haves" - food, gas, groceries, medicine - are hardly surviving, so you know a specialty shop is really taking a hit.

Our area is flooded with restaurants, drug stores and gas station/convenience stores, but most of the specialty stores have gone to the wayside.

Without a sustaining industry coming to our area, it will not be long til our little town will be a memory of what was.

Christmas and the Economy

How do you spend your way out of debt? I can't quite figure that one out.

We have spent years trying to change the image of Christmas and complaining it has become too commercial - too much spending, too much advertising, too much, well, of most everything. We have stressed that Christmas is a celebration of Jesus' birth. Christians know that December 25 may not be the actual date of birth, but no one seems to be able to calculate the exact date, so December 25 has been designated as the date.

The movers and shakers of the economic world seemed to base the state of the economy on the revenue earned during the Christmas season. Since Black Friday did not meet the sales expectations of the economist, we have been encouraged to spend, spend, spend.

There is a definite clash between the financial sector and the ideology of Christmas.

Have you seen a bicycle, a pair of skates, or a basketball with hoop advertised? Nope, because children are more interested in emulating mommy and daddy with their cell phones, iPods, Mp3, and laptops. Manufacturers and vendors are very much aware that this is a technological world. They have put their money into pushing items in electronics and technology. If a child were to receive a bicycle for Christmas instead of the cell phone which they crave, they would be highly disappointed.

It is easier and less time consuming for a parent to teach a child to use a cell phone than it is to teach them to ride a bike. The bike takes physical activity on both their parts. As I have said before, we have become a lazy society, dependent on a machine to perform for us.

Along another venue, the refinancing of mortgage loan program was considered a flop. Well, let's take a look. If a person is unemployed and has no idea when they will be reemployed, how will they get a loan approved? It seems the people are smarter than our legislators. People know they can not borrow money they have no way to pay back. Being unemployed is demoralizing, debilitating, and frustrating without being told "sorry, you don't qualify". Why add to their frustrations?
Listen legislators, being unemployed means having no visible means of support. I have talked to many many people looking for employment. They have tried the programs (refinancing, back to school, retraining), but if jobs are not available what do you do then? No amount of retraining can create jobs. No amount of refinancing can save a home if there is no money to pay the mortgage.

No we are back to the same round robin. Supply and demand is still the guideline for manufacturing and trade. If there is no demand, supply stops - therefore jobs are lost. So, yes, it makes sense to say spend, spend, spend. But, on the other hand.

Government Funded

After reading an article on the changes to the Health Care Bill, I am somewhat befuddled over the terminology. Government funded = People funded. Do our legislators not realize that it is the people's money, taxes deducted from each and every paycheck? This is not a monopoly game and these funds do not belong to the legislators to do as they see fit.

If Medicare is not working, then someone lied to the people when it was enacted.

If Social Security is not working, then someone lied to the people when it was enacted.

Yet, both taxes are still being deducted and placed in the coffers. Both programs are still functional. These two taxes were designated taxes - not general income tax to be used for general operations of our country's government.

During the early 60s we studied the Social Security System in a U. S. Government class. As students we were told Social Security would be broke by the time we retired. The same story is told today, over 40 years later.

Adding Another Interesting Link

As a result of an email requesting support the site found at WWW.webcommentary.com has been added to the interesting sites list in the left hand column. According to the email I received and Web Commentary, a treaty will be signed by many world leaders in Copenhagen at a gathering taking place from December 7 -18. The words "world government" are used in the text of the treaty. If signed by our President, America would surrender her sovereignty to this one world entity. The United States Constitution requires all treaties be ratified by a 2/3 vote of the Senate.

I have more research to do on climate change and global warming, but this is not something I could support if the treaty reads as stated. Please contact your US Senator and express your views. Our United States could be brought to her knees without a shot ever been fired.

Dementia

Sitting in his folding chair, absorbing God's wonderful sunshine, he notices some grass getting too close to his roses. He decides he will go to the shed and get the hoe after he rests for a minute. Nope, he better do it now, before he forgets. The walk to the shed is a familiar one. He has walked that walk thousands of times. So many early mornings, before the sun came up, cows waiting to be milked, then back to the house for breakfast before he started on the fence or the fields. Now where was he going? Those plum trees sure do look pretty, but need to get those weeds out from around them. The old dairy barn needs a new roof. Maybe it can be done next year. What was he going to the shed for? When did it get to be so far from the house to the shed? Go on Max, you gonna make me fall. That old dog wasn't good for nothing but to get in the way, but he sure was pretty. Sitting down on his work stool, he tried to remember what he came out here for. It was getting awfully hard to remember things these days.

Wake up! Wake up! The phone is ringing and Mama ain't here to answer it. "Hello. What do you want? Who the hell is this?" Slamming the phone down he heads for the bathroom. That dang medicine makes you have to go and go and go. He can't go anywhere anymore because of the dang medicine. Finally, back in his chair to finish his nap. Who was that on the phone? Blasted con men are always calling trying to get you. You can't trust anybody anymore!

"Can you rub my arm? It aches like a toothache. Not that arm, what are you rubbing that arm for? It don't hurt. It's the other arm." These people are idiots. Always trying to get me to do what they want me to do. All I want to do is stay right here and everybody leave me alone. "You tell that damn doctor I am not going back to that hospital. Hell, they try to kill you up there and I am not taking that medicine anymore."

Dementia is hard on everyone - the patient, the caregiver, the frequent visitor, even the doctor. It doesn't matter what stage the dementia patient is in, these people can no longer control where their minds wander. They say and do things they would have never done before. Patience and understanding is suppose to be the key. Do you have the answer?

How the "Old Ones" Must Feel

I haven't fought any wars. I did lose a cousin to the Viet Nam War - not conflict, WAR. I had friends that are not with us as a result of the same war and many friends and relatives that served our country in their endeavours to free the South Korean people from the tyranny of North Korea. I also know some that left the country to exempt themselves of service. My father fought in World War II as did many other relatives and friends.

I am appalled and offended by the actions and demeanor shown to tyrants of foreign countries by our President. President Obama seems to forget he is no longer functioning as an individual living in the land of the free, but rather represents ALL the people of this great nation. How must these relatives and friends feel with President Obama apologizing for the American people? After what they have done to protect the freedoms of not just this great country, but the freedom of those people that have solicited the aid of our armed services in their battles against tyranny, how do they view the actions of our President?

I received an email today presenting a letter to President Obabma from a 95 year old man. He served before, during, and after WWII. Mr. Estes says "I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish." Mr. Estes' feelings are eloquently expressed to our President. I know my father feels the same way as do many, many friends.

I sincerely hope that President Obama takes to heart the many letters he must be receiving from people just like Mr. Estes. As Mr. Estes advises our President, "You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president." I agree, President Obama could be the leader this nation needs to pull us all together in this time of economic stress, or he could be the downfall of the America we so proudly call home.

Finally Mr. Estes advises "Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now." America, the land of open arms, golden opportunities and freedom can be made stronger by the actions and words of President Obama or he can continue to exhibit shame at being president of an ignorant people and a heartless nation. It is up to him now, but remember he only has 3 years and 1 month left before his bid for relection.

American Music Awards

A complete let down! I sat down to watch the awards show and for a minute I thought I had it on the wrong channel. The performances on last night's show were more suited to a Sci Fi movie. The performers let me down and let me down hard. Expecting to see the emotions and nuances expressed by the performances, I saw a light show that replaced talent and a whole lot of militant dancing revealing the aggressive nature of the art of music has become.

It was not an entertaining show, but a bad display of the degradation and vulgarity of mankind. I didn't appreciate it and yes, I could have stopped watching. I was hoping that eventually I was see musical talent displayed. After all it was a music awards show. A night of disappointment, the finale revealed why Adam did not win the American Idol. He is a superb performer and his true colors came through last night.

Performers remember, you can make trillions of dollars at what you do, but will you be remembered? I failed to see a Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, nor did I see a Cash, McIntyre, Elvis, Lynn, Jones, Martin, Sinatra, not even anything close to a Michael Jackson. There was no Beatles, Supremes, Commodores, Imperials. Yes, I could go on and on, but for now I don't see a performer that will withstand the sands of time to be remembered as a great artist.

Mammograms

In 1995 my primary care physician discovered a mass in my left breast. She followed up the physical examination with a mammogram and a ultrasound. A lumpectomy was performed in which a non cancerous mass was removed and a very small cancerous tumor was removed. I was 45 years of age.

I had not been feeling well for a few months, but could not say that I felt sick. I just knew something was wrong. My daughter who worked for my primary care physician made me an appointment and called to let me know I needed to come in. Bless her heart! I was scared beyond belief, but the surgery went well and back to work I went. I declined radiation much to the surgeon's chagrin, but he explained that with radiation the chance of reoccurring somewhere else in my body was 30%. Nope, I was not going to fry my breast tissue for the cancer to come back in my kidney or liver or where ever it chose.

Three months later I was advised it had returned and a double mastectomy was the preferred treatment. I requested a second opinion. Two weeks later I was at Emory and was told there was no cancer. Whatever the doctors had seen was gone. I believe it was the hand of God. More pragmatic individuals have told me that it was probably a fault in the machine. Whatever, I was back to being cancer free. I was blessed for mine to have turned out so well. There are many, many others that cannot tell their story or even listen to mine. Some of them had waited way too long to get that small lump they found in their monthly breast check, checked out. Some were too scared to go to the doctor, afraid of the bad "C" word.

The panel that just made a decision for millions of women and announced that mammograms are not recommended until age 50 and monthly breast checks are not needed just plain scares the hell out of me. Please reconsider this decision and ladies - do your monthly breast checks. Insurance is not needed for the monthly checks and can mean a world of difference if a mass is found.

The operations and functions of a woman's body is so intricate and yet so vital to the world. Without a woman, man would not be.

Sewing Machines

If you have read previous posts, you will know that at one time I took in sewing as a living - yes, it was a long time ago, but sewing has always been an important part of me. I made hundreds of clothes for me, my sister, my children and my sister's children. That is why it was so important to me to get my sewing machine out of storage and back into use. It has been six years this month that I have gone without my machine.

Notice that I said my machine. I have had two sewing machines in my lifetime and I have been sewing for 45 years. My father purchased a used Necchi sewing machine for my mother on her 32 birthday. An Italian made sewing machine the Necchi was the top dog in sewing machines and Dad paid a pretty penny for it at the time. As much as my mother would love to sew, she doesn't have the patience. Some people are not meant to sew - it takes a lot of sitting, long bouts of concentration and tons of patience. So, I took over the Necchi and claimed it as mine - no one ever argued over the fact.

Mother gave me a new sewing machine when I was a senior in high school. I must not have thought much of it because I don't even remember the brand. I made lots of clothes for my sister and a few things for me, but it just didn't cut it - I loved the Necchi. So when the new machine died after 18 months, I begged for the Necchi and it has gone with me through my life.

Today my Necchi came out of retirement. I finally got it out, cleaned it up, and oiled it and behold, it runs like a top! The tension will need some adjusting, but it is cleaned and oiled and sleeping very comfortably until I get ready to start some projects. Can you tell this event has boosted my morale and brought joy to my heart. With three granddaughters, I plan to be busy with sewing projects.
